Here’s a hero in a mask…

This morning, I tried to come up with a list of things that have an indirect benefit to you, but that many of us do without giving it a second thought. Many of the things I thought of require you to inconvenience yourself either in terms of time, money, hassle, etc. But, we do them anyway.

1. Using a car seat for your child
2. Giving blood
3. Donating an organ
4. Learning CPR/first aid/Heimlich maneuver
5. Mentoring
6. Donating or contributing to a cause
7. Paying school taxes if you don’t have children
8. Holding the door for someone with physical challenges
9. Coaching little league or children’s sports
10. Serving your country in the military

To me, nothing on this list is any different than wearing a mask, washing the filth off your hands and staying 6' away from people you don’t live with.

None of these things restrict your freedom. They all require you to give of yourself and to place others before your own direct benefit. Do we call the people who do these things weak, fearful, stupid or oppressing? No, we have a different word for them. We call them heroes. We call them good citizens. We call them our friends.

Wear a mask. It’s not about you. It’s about all the rest of us, including the ones you love and the ones whose names you’ll never know. Be a hero!
